The trip
What is the boat & surf casting fishing trip ?
A trip to discover every side of sport fishing in Casamance. You'll take on barracuda trolling or livebait, fight a big guitarfish in surf casting, or hook a red snapper or a fine threadfin jigging. Three days by boat, where my skippers take you into the neighbouring bird reserve, where fish density stays high — trolling, drift jigging, handline fishing with mullet, cobo, yaboy, cuttlefish or shrimp depending on the day. The other three days are spent along twenty kilometres of the region's beaches, between the Kabadio river mouth to the north and the Bliss river mouth to the south, passing the sandbars and the Kafountine wrecks stranded on the sand.
Two other formulas exist at ATLANTIC: the surf casting trip, entirely dedicated to fishing from the shore, and the predator fishing trip, entirely dedicated to boat fishing. This one is the only trip that combines both, over one week split evenly in two.

Every technique, on the water and on foot
By boat, five techniques depending on the spot and the tide
Our open-hull Yamaha boats run on 40 or 75 HP engines depending on the boat, fitted with livewells, fish finders, GPS, life jackets and a first-aid kit. Outings last about 8 hours, with tackle and bait supplied.
- Livebait, to catch a fine threadfin or a big barracuda.
- Casting, near the mangrove roots where red snapper hide.
- Trolling and lure casting, over the sandbanks where jacks hunt.
- Jigging and soft lures, at the river mouth where jacks and threadfin strike.
- Handline fishing, with different bait depending on the day: mullet, cobo, yaboy, cuttlefish or shrimp.
On the beach, twenty kilometres of spots
Surf casting doesn't mean you can't try lure casting too — a good spot is always worth a cast. Two 4x4 vehicles handle transfers and surf casting outings.
- Classic surf casting, along the beaches from Abéné to Niafarang.
- Lure casting, on the best spots scouted in advance.
- Kabadio river mouth, to the north of the fishing zone.
- Bliss river mouth, to the south of the fishing zone.
- Sandbars and Kafountine wrecks, stranded on the beach, which hold fish in place.
The species
The species on this trip
Ten species are genuinely on the programme between boat and beach, not counting the rarer catches. Two different jacks swim these waters: the crevalle jack and the pompano jack, each with its own hunting ground.
The crevalle jack
The crevalle jack remains the most combative fish in our tropical waters. Aggressive on lures, its fight empties a reel in seconds. It patrols the sandbanks hunting small mullet, with crab and shrimp making up the rest of its diet.
The pompano jack
The pompano jack takes both at the river mouth and along the sandbanks, on jig or soft lure alike. Less bulky than the crevalle jack, it's no less a nervy opponent, capable of several long runs before it comes to the boat.
The bronze grouper
The bronze grouper holds on hard bottoms and deep pits, ready to strike a lure passing too close to its lair. Once hooked, it immediately tries to reach cover — the first seconds of the fight leave no room for error on the drag.
The guitarfish
Many flatfish patrol the beaches of Casamance. Sole, turbot and rays all sift the sand for food. You'll catch guitarfish surf casting along the beaches of Abéné and as far as Niafarang, which has a small river mouth of its own.
The red snapper
Vertical jigging with soft lures or jigs remains the most effective technique for red snapper in our waters. One snapper was recently tempted by a culprit lure on an 18-gram jig head, right against the mangrove roots.

The threadfin
The threadfin (Polydactylus quadrifilis) is mainly taken on livebait, positioned over deep pits or along the tidal current, but also on soft lures in vertical jigging.

The barracuda
Barracuda are taken trolling along the mangrove roots and at the river mouth, or on surface lures when they're hunting through schools of mullet. Their sharp teeth call for a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader.

The sompat grunt
The sompat grunt shares the same sandbanks and river mouths as its cousin the red snapper, with a more modest fight but very good eating.

The African sicklefish
Silvery and flat-bodied, the African sicklefish patrols the murky waters near the river mouth, often mixed in with schools of jacks. It's taken on livebait or small lures.

The stingray
The stingray shares the same sandbanks as the guitarfish, recognisable by its whip-like tail armed with a barb — handle with care once it's landed.

Overview
A multi-fishing trip: you'll fish by boat as well as from the shore, every technique on the table. Departures at dawn, back at the hotel around 4pm, picnic on board.
Welcome and transfers
Transfers are covered from Banjul, Ziguinchor or Cap Skirring airports, included in the package — except for a surcharge for Cap Skirring.
A typical day
Departure at dawn for the jetty, fishing in the mangrove depending on the guide's choice and the fish's mood, picnic at noon, back around 4pm.
